Designing Durable Kids’ Bathrooms in Lemont, IL
In a home designed around the whole family, the children’s bathrooms had a clear brief: stand up to daily use by kids, keep everyone moving in the morning, and still feel designed rather than merely practical. Two bathrooms, two different personalities, one shared standard of craftsmanship. The parents wanted spaces that would survive years of hard use and still look intentional.
The Boys’ Bathroom: A Three-Sink Design Built for Daily Use
The boys’ bathroom is a lesson in designing for real life. Three growing boys share it, so it starts with three individual sinks, each child gets his own dedicated space, which quietly eliminates the busiest source of morning friction. Just as smart is the layout: the toilet and shower sit in a separate room from the vanity, so several kids can use the bathroom at the same time.
The materials are chosen to take a beating and clean up easily. The vanity is DalTile Broadway Black quartz in a Lava (matte) finish, tough, forgiving, and low-maintenance, with a square polished backsplash featuring inside scallop detailing that keeps it from feeling utilitarian. Behind each mirror is a Virginia Tile plaid-inspired backsplash that gives the room its character, and stone thresholds match the vanity countertops for continuity. Inside the shower niches, Broadway Black stone shelves tie back to the counters. The fixtures and accessories are matte black throughout, plumbing, shower hardware, shower frame and hinges, coordinated down to the details so the room reads as designed, not assembled.

The Daughter’s Bathroom: Custom Tile and Quartz Shelving
Here the statement is Virginia Tile “Wow Stripes” wall tile, paired with brushed nickel plumbing fixtures for a softer metallic warmth. The shower niches feature MSI Calacatta Monaco quartz shelves in a double-shelf configuration, the same custom stone approach used in the primary bath, scaled to a child’s bathroom. Every finish is coordinated, and the materials are elegant but genuinely durable for everyday family use.
Why These Kids’ Bathrooms Balance Durability and Design
These rooms work because durability and design aren’t treated as a trade-off. Matte quartz, easy-clean surfaces, and coordinated fixtures mean the bathrooms will perform for years of kids’ use, while the plaid and striped tiles, custom scallop detailing, and matching stone shelves give each child a space with real personality. The three-sink vanity and separate toilet/shower room in the boys’ bath are the kind of functional decisions that make a family home actually livable, the sort of thing rarely found in a production build.
