Marble countertops for kitchens, bathrooms and bars

Prized for centuries, natural marble brings soft, flowing veining and a luminous depth that no engineered surface fully imitates. Each slab is one of a kind, quarried from the earth with its own pattern of movement, so the countertop you choose is unlike anyone else’s.

At Mart Design Co.’s studio in Naperville, homeowners can explore full marble slabs, compare colors and finishes, and get honest, expert guidance on selection, fabrication, and installation. Marble asks a little more of you than some stones, and we’ll walk you through what living with it is like before you commit.

Why choose marble countertops?

Marble has been the mark of timeless and elegant interiors for generations. It's a natural stone, so no two slabs match, and its cool surface and signature veining give kitchens and baths a classic character that reads as high design without shouting about it. Here's what draws homeowners to it:

  Unmatched natural veining and movement

Every slab is one of a kind

  Timeless and classic elegance

  Naturally cool surface

Brightens and opens up a space

Adds lasting design value to a home

Marble countertop colors and styles

Marble ranges from crisp, gallery-white backgrounds to warm creams and moody grays, and the veining can be a whisper or the whole story. Every slab tells its own.

White Marble Countertops

Home to the famous Italian whites: Carrara, with soft gray veining, and Calacatta and Statuario, prized for bolder veining on a whiter background. Pairs with nearly any cabinet color.

Dramatic Veined Marble

Bold, sweeping veins that make a statement, perfect for a waterfall island or full-height backsplash. The most dramatic Calacatta and Statuario slabs belong here, along with gold, green, or charcoal veining.

Gray Marble Countertops

Cooler, contemporary, and versatile. Gray-veined marbles like Carrara and the deeper Bardiglio work beautifully with white oak, matte black fixtures, and modern or transitional kitchens.

Warm Cream Marble Countertops

Softer beige and cream tones with gentle veining, such as Crema Marfil, ideal for warm, organic interiors and homes that lean traditional or Mediterranean.

Marble countertop finishes

The finish changes how marble looks, feels, and lives day to day, and with marble the finish decision matters more than with most stones.

Icon

Polished Marble

A glossy, reflective surface that deepens the color and makes the veining pop. The most dramatic finish, and the one that shows etching most readily, so it's best loved by homeowners who welcome a lived-in patina.
Icon

Honed Marble

A soft matte finish that's the practical favorite for kitchens. Honing takes the shine down and, importantly, makes the small etch marks that marble naturally develops far less visible. If you want marble in a hardworking kitchen, this is usually where we steer you.
Icon

Leathered Marble

A subtle textured finish that hides fingerprints and water spots while keeping a natural, tactile feel. A good middle ground on darker and gray marbles.

Designer recommendation: choose marble if...

You love the look of true natural stone and you value classic beauty over bulletproof toughness. Marble is ideal for homeowners who appreciate that a natural surface develops character over time, and who want a countertop with genuine presence. It's especially great for statement islands, full-height backsplashes, baking and pastry stations, bathroom vanities, and fireplace surrounds. We'll be straight with you about care so you choose it with eyes open, and honed or leathered finishes make everyday living with marble much more forgiving.

Kitchen marble countertops

A honed marble island or perimeter brings light and timeless elegance to the heart of the home. We'll help you pick the finish and layout that fits how your kitchen actually gets used.

Bathroom marble countertops

Marble is a natural fit for a vanity or primary bath, where it sees gentler use and rewards you with a spa-like, luminous surface.

Fireplace surrounds and feature walls

Marble's veining makes a striking fireplace surround or feature wall, a lower-traffic spot where the stone's beauty leads and durability matters less.

Butler's pantry and bar marble

Bring the material into a scullery, butler's pantry, or bar for a refined, coordinated look that ties back to the main kitchen.
PROCESS

Marble countertop fabrication and installation process

How Stone Countertops Are Fabricated: From Slab to InstallationMarble takes real skill to fabricate well. Soft, veined stone has to be cut and seamed so the pattern flows, and edges shaped so the material is protected where it’s handled most. Because our fabrication happens in-house here in Naperville, the same team that helps you choose the slab is the one templating, cutting, and setting it. On one recent kitchen, our fabricators built a custom marble shelf right where a full-height backsplash met a vaulted ceiling, turning an awkward stopping point into one of the best features in the room, and vein-matched a double waterfall island so the pattern flows unbroken down both sides. That kind of result comes from the shop, not the slab.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions about marble

Yes, with the right expectations. Marble is softer and more porous than granite or quartzite, so it can etch and scratch over time. Many homeowners love that lived-in patina. If you’d rather minimize it, a honed finish and prompt sealing go a long way, and we’ll walk you through the tradeoffs before you decide.

es. Marble is porous and should be sealed on installation and periodically after, which helps it resist staining from oils, wine, and acidic foods. We’ll explain the sealing schedule for the specific marble you choose so it stays beautiful.

Etching is a dull mark left when something acidic (lemon, vinegar, wine) reacts with the stone’s surface. It’s different from a stain. A honed finish makes etching far less noticeable, which is why we often recommend honed marble for kitchens.

arble spans a wide range depending on the variety and rarity of the slab. Some marbles are comparable to premium granite or quartzite, while rare statement slabs cost more. Seeing full slabs in our studio is the best way to match a marble you love to your project.

They can look similar, but quartzite is harder and more scratch- and etch-resistant, while marble is softer with a distinctive cool feel and classic veining. If you want the marble look with more durability, we’ll show you quartzites that get you there.

Yes. Because we fabricate in-house, we can sequence the cuts from the same slab so the veining flows continuously down a waterfall island or up a full-height backsplash, which is one of the most striking things marble can do. Check out this project we’ve completed in Naperville.
