A Marble Waterfall Kitchen Built Through Trusted Collaboration

This luxury new construction kitchen was the result of a collaborative effort between Charleston Builders, Lauren Collander Interiors, and Mart Design Co.’s stone fabrication team. While the builder and designer created the home’s overall vision, Mart Design Co. was entrusted with fabricating and installing every marble surface throughout the kitchen. The homeowner specifically requested Mart Design Co. after working with the team on a previous residence, an endorsement that speaks to the craftsmanship and attention to detail that carried into this custom home.

The homeowner’s goals for the stonework:

  • Create a timeless luxury kitchen using natural marble.
  • Highlight the scale and architecture of the vaulted space.
  • Showcase continuous marble veining throughout the island.
  • Design oversized stone features that feel custom and architectural.
  • Maintain elegant proportions that complement the home’s grand design.

Inside the Stone Fabrication: Countertops, Island, and Backsplash

Marble Countertops, Waterfall Island, and Backsplash

  • Natural marble countertops with full-height marble backsplash.
  • Natural stone selected for its elegance and unique veining.
  • Custom fabrication throughout the kitchen.
  • Oversized waterfall island serves as the centerpiece of the kitchen with precision-mitered edges creating a substantial 2½-inch profile.
  • Continuous vein matching from the horizontal countertop surface down both waterfall panels.
  • Cabinetry custom-built to carry the thicker countertop profile.
  • A 48-inch undermount sink integrated into the marble to add function and reinforce the room’s oversized scale.

Solving the Vaulted-Ceiling Backsplash with a Custom Marble Shelf

One of the most technically challenging parts of the project was the full-height marble backsplash beneath the vaulted ceiling. As the ceiling transitioned into an angled slope, the stone needed a deliberate place to terminate. Rather than ending the marble abruptly, our fabrication team built a custom marble shelf at the transition point, an architectural finish that follows the room’s ceiling lines instead of fighting them.

That solution turned a difficult stopping point into one of the kitchen’s most distinctive details.

Marble Fabrication Highlights

  • Full-height marble backsplash.
  • Custom marble shelf terminating at vaulted ceiling.
  • Double waterfall island.
  • Precision mitered fabrication.
  • 2½-inch laminated edge profile.
  • Continuous waterfall vein matching.
  • Oversized undermount sink cutout.
  • Custom fabrication tailored to cabinetry dimensions.

How Stone Fabrication Shaped This Kitchen

Grand in scale yet restrained in character, this kitchen shows how precise stone fabrication can carry an already beautiful design. Set beneath soaring vaulted ceilings, the space pairs its architecture with carefully selected natural marble. The overall vision came from the builder and interior designer; Mart Design Co.’s role was to fabricate and install every marble surface to match that scale.

The work called for meticulous fabrication and creative problem-solving. The clearest example is the full-height backsplash, where the vaulted ceiling interrupted a traditional termination point. Rather than ending the stone abruptly, our team fabricated a custom marble shelf that follows the angled ceiling, a finish that reads as intentional from every angle.

The expansive island anchors the room, with waterfall panels on both ends and marble veining flowing continuously from the countertop down each side. Precision-mitered edges create a substantial 2½-inch profile, made possible by cabinetry engineered to accommodate the thicker stone. An oversized 48-inch undermount sink completes it, blending everyday function with the room’s generous proportions. Every fabrication detail was executed to complement the home’s scale while keeping the marble itself the focus.
